About Ian Thornley:

What does it mean to be a rock and roll band in 2017? When you have a bunch of modern rock radio staples to your credit, earned platinum sales status, and shared stages with music icons, where do you go next? The answer is simple: To be an artist these days, one needs to embrace everything, and have the skill and savvy to put it all together with a clear vision of an end result.

“Musically, I’m still searching for the stuff that turns me on and takes me somewhere,” he says. “You want to be brought to tears or have the hair on your neck stand up, and if the search for that takes you to new territory, then so be it.”

For the Toronto-born Thornley, that search began in his youth when his classic rock heroes inspired him picked up the guitar. The original Big Wreck line-up, including Brian Doherty, was formed in the early 1990s while all members were attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a few years of honing their sound, the band was signed to Atlantic Records, which released their instantly embraced debut album In Loving Memory Of… in 1997. It proved to be a major homecoming for Thornley, as singles “The Oaf,” “That Song” and “Blown Wide Open” were all Top 10 hits in Canada, boosted by the band’s intense live shows.

Big Wreck chose to go their separate ways following the 2001 follow-up album The Pleasure And The Greed, with Thornley quickly forming a new group bearing his surname, which over time brought Dave McMillan and Paulo Neta into the fold. Although Thornley the band released two commercially successful albums over a nine-year span, Thornley the musician eventually grew disenchanted with the group’s approach, and a rekindling of his friendship with Doherty sparked the notion of a re-born Big Wreck.

It proved to be an astute decision on all fronts, as the “comeback” album Albatross turned in a Top 5 first-week showing on the Canadian Albums Chart, the highest debut of any previous Big Wreck or Thornley release. It would go on to earn a 2013 JUNO nomination for Rock Album of the Year and spawn three Top 10 Canadian Rock Radio singles.

The fresh start invariably led to Thornley’s creative renaissance, with other facets of his life and career eventually following suit. What he’s also come to terms with is allowing Big Wreck to be whatever it wants to be, whether that’s a riff-spewing, multi-guitar beast or a vehicle for sonic boundary pushing. There are no longer any limits.

As Thornley explains, “It’s like when you run into someone on vacation and they ask what you do. When I say I’m a musician, they’ll ask what kind of music I play, and I’ll always just say rock and roll. But within that are so many flavours you can’t even begin to describe.”

About The Sheepdogs:

Trends come and go, styles fall in and out of fashion, but The Sheepdogs remain steadfast in their commitment to rock n’ roll excellence. Since their inception, the band has always sought to play the kind of music they themselves love: “Pure, simple, good-time music,” as singer/guitarist Ewan Currie puts it. It’s no surprise, then, that the band’s fifth LP, Future Nostalgia, is firmly rooted in the rock tradition that listeners have come to expect from the boys.

The idea was simple: find a nice, quiet, secluded place and make a record packed with all the hot guitar licks and sing-along choruses they could muster. So the band holed up in a rented house in the remote, idyllic setting of Stony Lake, Ontario, and set about creating a studio where they could work all hours of the day. “We wanted to cut out all the noise and get back to a place where we could just fully immerse ourselves in music,” says Currie, who took on production duties for the album. “We worked hard, but we also made sure to keep it loose and have ourselves a good time.”

Future Nostalgia is the middle ground between the JUNO-winning, platinum-certified Learn & Burn, which spawned the rock radio staple “I Don’t Know,” and its equally successful follow-up, 2012’s The Sheepdogs, featuring the instantly-recognizable, Gold-certified singles “Feeling Good” and “The Way It Is.”

The former was recorded by Currie and the band in their hometown of Saskatoon before they were propelled to fame as the first unsigned band to grace the cover of Rolling Stone, pressure free and at their own pace. Its follow-up, however, recorded in Nashville with producer and Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, was a much more formal and rigid studio experience. This time, the band aimed to combine the successes and lessons learned from these opposite ends of the recording spectrum.

Future Nostalgia builds upon The Sheepdogs’ foundation of feel-good vocal harmonizing and nasty guitar jamming. “Our musical journey has been about trying to find how we sound our best,” states Currie, and the album represents the pinnacle of their progresheepdogs5ss thus far. That’s made immediately clear from the opening riff of “Downtown,” an undeniable straight-up rocker that sparkles with the warmth of summer. Down at the other end of the street is “Bad Lieutenant,” which walks a dark and sexy strut courtesy of bassist Ryan Gullen and drummer Sam Corbett, who also tear up the furious “I Really Wanna Be Your Man.”

Newcomers Rusty Matyas and Ewan’s brother Shamus Currie, on guitar and keys respectively, bring a new spirit to the wistful back porch vibes of “Same Old Feeling” or the brooding melancholy of “Jim Gordon.” Elsewhere, the ominous groove of “Help Us All” calls to mind the bleak violence of Blood Meridian as sung by Sly & the Family Stone, punctuated by a devastating trombone solo from Shamus.

Now, The Sheepdogs are eager to embark on the next leg of their journey, which will involve many miles logged and stages played. “I’m excited for people to hear the album, because it’s a

labour of love,” Currie says proudly. “Now, it’s just about getting it out there and getting people into it.”

From their cramped Saskatchewan jam space to gold and platinum records and shows with rock icons, The Sheepdogs haven’t strayed from their goal of sharing pure, passionate rock n’ roll with anyone who’ll listen – and Future Nostalgia is packed with it.

About Georges St-Pierre:

Georges “Rush” St-Pierre, also known as “GSP,” is a Canadian professional mixed martial artist and UFC world champion who holds black belts in both Kyokushin karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Georges was raised in St-Isidore, Quebec, a town of about 2,000 people. As a child he was bullied for years by older schoolmates. His father had introduced him to Kyokushin karate at age 7, “but life isn’t like a movie,” he said. “You can do all the karate you want, when you’re eight or nine-years-old and they’re 12, when you’re alone and there’s three of them, you can’t do anything. That’s the reality.”

Already a 2nd dan Kyokushin karate black belt at 12, Georges dedicated himself to martial arts and training throughout his teen years. After seeing Royce Gracie fight in 1993 at UFC 1, Georges knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life and how he was going to reach those goals: he invested all his energy and all his time at becoming a better version of himself. When he wasn’t training or at school, Georges worked as a doorman in nightclubs, or hung off the back of a garbage truck, hauling in refuse. He discovered a simple truth: never stopping helps reach goals.gsp_fr

He grew as a person and as a fighter. He added fighting disciplines such as boxing, wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to his karate background and competed in his first amateur bout at age 16. He won that match, and continued his steady improvement. In 2006 he became the UFC Welterweight Champion. He lost the title in 2007 but subsequently regained it in front of his hometown fans of Montreal in 2008 and hasn’t lost a single title defense since then.

Recognized as one of the planet’s best pound-for-pound MMA fighter and all around athlete, GSP lives in Montreal but travels around the world to train with the best coaches and training partners in all disciplines.

About Mark DeMontis:

Like many young Canadians, Toronto native Mark DeMontis dreamed of playing in the NHL. At age 17, one year away from an NCAA scholarship, Mark’s dream was shattered as he was diagnosed with LHON – Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy – a rare mitochondria disease causing an irreversible and incurable loss of central vision in both his eyes.

In 2008, he founded Courage Canada – a national charitable organization which raised funds and awareness to start Blind Hockey programs for over 1,000 Canadians. Mark launched the charity with two consecutive Cross-Canada inline skate fundraiser campaigns. In 2009, he skated 5,000km from Toronto to Vancouver, while in 2011 he skated an additional 2.000km from Halifax to Toronto.  Since established, the charity raised over $1 Million and successfully built the Canadian Blind Hockey Association.

Mark was honoured by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and was even chosen to present her majesty Queen Elizabeth with the final farewell flowers to conclude her last Royal Canadian Tour. Mark has carried multiple Olympic and Paralympic torches and was also a recipient of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award.

Mark’s story was featured on CTV W5 entitled Hockey Visionary with Lloyd Robertson, which led to a career in television hosting five seasons of Canada’s first disability sports show – Sports Access on AMI-TV. Recently, he was Host of Are You #ParaTough – a one hour documentary following Mark’s journey through Paralympic testing leading up to the 2016 Games in Rio.

Now 29, Mark has created Courage Hockey – www.couragehockey.com – a new lifestyle and apparel company focused on inspiring the game. Meet Mark and the Courage Hockey team in their booth all weekend at Gentlemen’s Expo and be sure to grab their launch apparel.

About Jim Cuddy:

With sales of more than four million records and eleven JUNO Awards, Blue Rodeo has established itself as one of Canada’s leading contemporary rock bands. Founded in 1984 by lead singers, guitarists and songwriters Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor, the band’s success and longevity are widely attributed to their love of touring, their active connection with their fans, and their unwavering commitment to pushing their creative limits. Blending country, blues, folk and rock influences, Blue Rodeo deliver a consistently recognizable, enpollockheather_jimcuddy_0986_2gaging sound while reinventing themselves with every new album and project.

The band played their first show in 1985 at The Rivoli in Toronto and quickly developed a loyal following on the Toronto music circuit. Their debut album Outskirts (1987), featuring the hit single “Try,” went double platinum and launched a three-decade-long career of headlining almost every club, theatre and arena in the country. Blue Rodeo continue to tour extensively across Canada and the United States, and perform regularly at benefit concerts and charity events in support of causes ranging from school music programs to community health initiatives and disaster relief.

To date, Blue Rodeo has released thirteen full-length studio albums, three live recordings, one greatest hits package, and five DVDs. In 1998, Jim released the first of three solo albums, All in Time, that went on to sell Gold and garner him the Best Male Vocalist JUNO Award. His next album, 2006’s The Light That Guides You Home, won the Juno for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. In 2011 Jim released Skyscraper Soul, his 3rd solo album, to critical acclaim.  His voice, always a voluptuous instrument, has never sounded better and Cuddy proves once again that his songwriting ranks with the best Canada has to offer.

Blue Rodeo’s awards and honours include eleven JUNO Awards, the Governor General’s Award for Performing Arts, a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, membership in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, 15 SOCAN Classics Awards and National Achievement Award, and the keys to the City of Toronto. Giving the audience an incredibly interactive show, his hypnosis show allows your audience to become the stars! chrisjones offers a performance unlike any other!

Chicago-native, chrisjones took a roundabout way to becoming one of today’s most entertaining performers on the college market. A nationally ranked athlete in college, he studied Sociology and Psychology claiming himself to be a “social engineer with deviant motives.” He was a Resident Assistant for three years and used magic as a means of connecting with students living in the hall.

After years of performing only magic and stand-up comedy at weddings, bars and smoky nightclubs, chrisjones realized he wanted “to learn some new tricks.” While in graduate school, he became fascinated with the art of hypnosis and found the missing piece of his show. Performing three shows a week while obtaining a Masters studying Therapeutic Recreation, he tirelessly analyzed every second of his show to find the perfect balance of conjuring, psychology, comedy and suggestion.

Physically living on university campuses for SEVEN YEARS, gave chrisjones the unique opportunity to roll out of bed (in the “dorms”) everyday and practice hypnosis and close up magic for real and unbiased audiences. After years of perfecting his art, semester after semester of new fans and friends, chrisjones is offering your students a hypnotic experience they will never forget!

If there is a player who inspires near-hysteria among the Leafs Nation, it is Doug Gilmour.  Selected by St. Louis in the seventh round, he eventually started in 1983 when the Blues’ depleted roster required a call-up.  Nicknamed ‘Killer’ for his intensity, Gilmour played like a man much larger. After five seasons and the 1987 Canada Cup tournament, the Blues traded Gilmour to Calgary.  That year, he was a star in the playoffs (22 points in 22 games) and the Flames won their sole Stanley Cup.  After three more seasons, he was traded to Toronto in the biggest deal in league history.  In his first full season, he earned 127 points, a Maple Leaf franchise record and still won the Frank Selke trophy for best defensive forward!  The Leafs made him captain in 1994, which he remained until he was traded to New Jersey in 1997.  He then bounced between Chicago, Buffalo and Montreal before returning to Toronto.  In 1656 games, he finished with 510 goals and 1092 assists for 1602 points.  Doug is currently the General Manager of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs.

Wendel Clark

Clark was drafted First overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft after spending his Junior career with his home Province Saskatoon Blades on the WHL.  Clark represented Canada in wendel-headshot-2the ’85 World Juniors winning Gold.  In his rookie season with the Leafs, Wendel made an immediate impact in the league and with Leafs Nation.  He scored 34 goals for 45 points and took on all comers racking up 227 penalty minutes.  His physical style of play and offensive talent built the foundation of a great career and later leading to Clark becoming the Captain of the storied Maple Leafs.  He led by example and was the one working the hardest, scoring the big goals and doing whatever was needed to win.  This style of play took its toll and at the young age of 33 he was forced into retirement due to back injuries.  In 793 career NHL games Clark recorded 564 points and 1690 Penalty Minutes playing for Toronto, Quebec, NY Islanders, Tampa Bay, Detroit & Chicago.  He currently resides with his family in Toronto and keeps busy as an Ambassador with the Leafs plus various charitable causes and has a restaurant chain and Meineke Car Care Centres.

“My inspiration to start GRHPT has grown out of my journey to regenerate myslef after I suffered a serious neck injury that forced me to retire from the NHL in 1996. After two neck surgeries and a year of dedicated rehabilitation focusing on state-of-the-art training, regeneration and nutrition therapy, I was able to return to the game. Now my passion is education young players, helping them avoid some of the obstacles I faced in my career, and ultimately giving them the best chance at longevity in the sport.” – Gary Roberts

Behind The Cutting Board: Joe Friday

joey-friday

Chef Joe Friday was born in North Carolina, raised in Okinawa, Japan, trained in French Cuisine. His impressive culinary journey began when he enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America to train in pastries and savories.

At the age of 20 he was one of 10 pastry students selected globally to work in the international culinary program at Walt Disney World. Six months in, Friday’s superiors recognized great talent, and placed him on the “hot line.” There, is where Friday found his love and passion for savories and has been refining that talent ever since.

Within three years time, he had worked his way up to sous-chef and had successfully moved around to various restaurants within the Disney family. Friday was exposed to different cuisines and cooking techniques while working with influential chefs such as Chef Martin Yan (from “Yan Can Cook”) and Disney’s Executive Chef, John State.

After he apprenticed in Norway and England, he returned to Japan to perfect the culinary experience of his childhood; the art of Japanese noodle making. Friday took a position at the world renowned Nobu Wakiki, Honolulu. This was a pivotal moment in Friday’s career were he understood his identity as a chef. With a love for Honolulu, he furthered his career and established himself as the sous-chef at the Hilton Hawaii Village and shortly after became the Executive Chef at Giovani’s.

Seeking tutelage from Canadian renowned Chef Jason Bangerter, Friday assisted as the chef-da-partie in the opening of Toronto’s Luma by O&B at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. In the Fall of 2011, Friday joined the team at Bar Mozza (part of the Alimento Fine Food Emporium) downtown Toronto, as executive Chef.

Chef Joe Friday is also a co-founder and host of The Underground Chef Co. (UCC) which was founded in 2013 with the objective of providing Chefs and restaurateurs a platform to help promote and support the culinary community. UCC works with to-be-discovered Chefs in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa and their battles challenge Chefs to create several dishes from secret ingredients in under one-hour and provide audience goers with a real-time experience of life in the kitchen.

Behind The Cutting Board: Rob Rainford

CookingStage_Rob

Celebrity Chef Robert Rainford is a Canadian chef, author and television host of shows that have aired on stations including Food Network Canada, Discovery Home in the United States and Asian Food Channel throughout Asia. Robert was the host of the wildly popular Food Network TV show, License to Grill (which aired in Canada, the USA, Australia, Africa and Asia).

Born in the parish of Saint Andrew, Jamaica on November 30, 1966, Chef Robert Rainford moved to Canada with his family when he was only three years old. In 1994, he enrolled in culinary school and began a professional career shortly thereafter in which he honed his skills at some of the City of Toronto’s finest restaurants. His professional career has now culminated in his becoming the Chef Ambassador to Centennial College.

Although Robert is a classically trained chef, he is best known as a connoisseur of the grill and for the unveiling of his signature “Rainford Method” unveiled in his new book “Rob Rainford’s Born to Grill” which takes grilling to a whole new level with over 100 recipes and 20 complete menus, all designed for your backyard barbeque.

For Rob, grilling is about entertaining. It’s about spending time with friends and family and sharing precious moments together. This sentiment is captured in the “Rainford Method” and is evident whether he’s cooking on television, on stage in front of hundreds of people, or at home on the backyard patio.

If you weren’t working in the culinary industry, what would you be doing?

I would probably be still sitting at my plumbing wholesale buyer’s desk. I’m sure I’d be the GM buy now but I’m glad my passion for food won.

Any advice for people getting started in your industry? Best advice you’ve ever been given?

A wise old chef told me that when my hands catch up to the speed of my brain then I’d become the chef I dreamed of becoming.

What is your favourite restaurant, right now?

This is a hard question to answer because there are so many good restaurants but I’d have to say Ivana Raca from Raca Café & Bar. Chef Ivana Raca is at the top of my list I really respect her game.

In your opinion, what traits would you say describe the ideal Gentleman?

Good manners and a genuine respect for women and people in general. Patience and understanding will take you far. Last but not least LOVE & PASSION

If you could have dinner with anyone (Alive or Dead), who would it be, and why?

I would have dinner with my Grandmother on my Mother’s side of my family as she was the best Chef in our family period. I’d like to know if she thought I was up to her standard. I feel like a young kid again looking for her approval.

See and learn from Chef Rainford (and many others) as part of our CULINARY PROGRAMME at #TGE2016.
