Top 5 Discoveries at #TGE2016


One big takeaway from #TGE2016 is that we discover new things. Our audience tells us. Our vendors tell us. Our chefs tell us. Our celebrity guests tell us. It must be true. There are some killer products and awesome experiences that are here every year and we love them. But here’s a quick snapshot of some of the new items and experiences that rose to the top this year:

5) Jord – Wooden watches. Straight outta Missouri, these guys make some pretty badass watches. The wooden bracelets are stunning. Nothing like it. Get on our wrists!!!

4) The UCC Chef Battle – The Underground Chef Co do these battles on the regular, but this one was live inside The Gentlemen’s Expo. It’s chef vs chef with a secret ingredient thrown in to spice things up. A panel of culinary stars judge the battle and declare a victor. (For the record Chef Ted Reader won this time) Chef Joe Friday and Chef Mike Ward narrated the whole thing. It was crazy. It was a high energy and welcome addition to #TGE2016 and no doubt will be back next year.

3) Tenfed – This is a clothing company that is trying to make a difference. Kory and the crew offer up high quality tees and toques for a cause. Every Tenfed shirt sold helps feed 10 hungry children. Do you need any other reason to support this project?

2) We Are VR. Watching our audience experience VR for the first time was unreal. Slap on the headset and get transformed to another place. Gaming, movies and experiences are all next level now. The future of playing a game or watching a concert will blow your mind, as it did all weekend long at #TGE2016.

1) Parc City Boot Co. – These boots are unreal. They were flying off the shelves inside #TGE2016. Designed and hand-crafted in Portugal. We’re honoured that Parc City Boot Co were here and that our audience embraced them. Gentlemen of Toronto are savvy consumers and these boots have found a home.

Doug Gilmour

If there is a player who inspires near-hysteria among the Leafs Nation, it is Doug Gilmour.  Selected by St. Louis in the seventh round, he eventually started in 1983 when the Blues’ depleted roster required a call-up.  Nicknamed ‘Killer’ for his intensity, Gilmour played like a man much larger. After five seasons and the 1987 Canada Cup tournament, the Blues traded Gilmour to Calgary.  That year, he was a star in the playoffs (22 points in 22 games) and the Flames won their sole Stanley Cup.  After three more seasons, he was traded to Toronto in the biggest deal in league history.  In his first full season, he earned 127 points, a Maple Leaf franchise record and still won the Frank Selke trophy for best defensive forward!  The Leafs made him captain in 1994, which he remained until he was traded to New Jersey in 1997.  He then bounced between Chicago, Buffalo and Montreal before returning to Toronto.  In 1656 games, he finished with 510 goals and 1092 assists for 1602 points.  Doug is currently the General Manager of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs.

Wendel Clark

Clark was drafted First overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft after spending his Junior career with his home Province Saskatoon Blades on the WHL.  Clark represented Canada in wendel-headshot-2the ’85 World Juniors winning Gold.  In his rookie season with the Leafs, Wendel made an immediate impact in the league and with Leafs Nation.  He scored 34 goals for 45 points and took on all comers racking up 227 penalty minutes.  His physical style of play and offensive talent built the foundation of a great career and later leading to Clark becoming the Captain of the storied Maple Leafs.  He led by example and was the one working the hardest, scoring the big goals and doing whatever was needed to win.  This style of play took its toll and at the young age of 33 he was forced into retirement due to back injuries.  In 793 career NHL games Clark recorded 564 points and 1690 Penalty Minutes playing for Toronto, Quebec, NY Islanders, Tampa Bay, Detroit & Chicago.  He currently resides with his family in Toronto and keeps busy as an Ambassador with the Leafs plus various charitable causes and has a restaurant chain and Meineke Car Care Centres.

The team over at Underground Chef Co. have been hard at work organizing an amazing line-up of Chefs that hail from around the GTA to create a special edition Chef Battle, exclusively as part of The Gentlemen’s Expo Culinary Programme.

Underground Chef Co., challenges Chefs to create several dishes from secret ingredients in under one-hour and provide audience goers with a real-time experience of life in the kitchen. Chef Rob Rainford


Rob is a Canadian chef, author of Rob Rainford’s Born to Grill (published May 8, 2012 by Appetite by Random House) and former host of Licence to Grill (LTG) on Food Network Canada, Discovery Home in the U.S. and Asian Food Channel across Asia. The format of the show involves Rainford hosting a get-together at his home for one reason or another, and preparing meals on his grills for the occasion. The different “occasions” provide the impetus for the food choices, and allow Rob the opportunity to demonstrate different techniques.

Krista Faist


Krista is the owner of Foodism Toronto, the first international outpost of London England’s highly successful magazine Foodism. A Toronto native, she crossed the pond four years ago and worked with Foodism’s publisher Square Up Media for the majority of that time. She returned in late 2015 after with the Foodism brand with tow. The website and weekly newsletter launched in November 2015 with the first print issue landing in September 2016.

A lover of cats, hater of the term ‘cat lady’, endless curator of Spotify playlists and often called out for saying things a bit strange thanks to her her time in the UK, Krista is now back in Toronto discovering (read: eating and drinking) her way through the city, all in the name of work. of course.

Kevin Brauch


Kevin Brauch was the host of the show The Thirsty Traveler on the Fine Living Network (originally on the Food Network), MegaWorld on Discovery Channel Canada, and Superstar Chef Challenge on Food Network Canada. He also served as the floor reporter for Iron Chef America (on both the American and Canadian Food Networks). He was also the host the Food Network Canada program CheF*Off.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Brauch worked as a bartender for seven years early in his career while working his way through the radio and television program at Ryerson University.

Brauch worked for CFNY radio in Toronto (FM102) from 1988 to 1990. He began his television career on TVOKids in 1994. He received the Canadian Gemini award in 1998 for “Best Performance in a Children’s or Youth Program or Series” (Stuff “Triathon”), in 1999 for “Best Host in a Lifestyle or Performing Arts Program or Series” (Canadian Gardening III) and also in 2005 for “Best Host in a Lifestyle/Practical Information or Performing Arts Program or Series” (The Thirsty Traveler). Brauch appeared as a guest on NBC’s Tonight Show hosted by Jay Leno, taped on the afternoon of Friday, March 17, 2006.

In the Cora v. Miranda episode of Iron Chef America (2010), it was revealed that Kevin and host Alton Brown were Kentucky colonels. This appointment comes with the title of Colonel and so he could be addressed as Honorable Kevin Brauch or Colonel Kevin Brauch

Chef Amanda Ray


Amanda Ray has worked in some of the swankest restaurants in the city. After graduating from George Brown’s culinary programme she worked at Auberge du Pommier before taking on the role as a sous chef at Canoe. Following, Amanda was able to live her dream by studying rustic Provencal cuisine in France. Now she’s the chef de cuisine at Biff’s Bistro, another Oliver & Bonacini establishment and a longstanding favourite amongst Bay Street brokers and discerning foodies alike

Mentored by Corporate Executive Chef Anthony Walsh, she continued to hone her culinary skills. After a promotion to Sous Chef in 2006, she traveled to Crillon le Brave in Provence, France to expand her knowledge and technical skills alongside Chef Philippe Monti, cooking rustic Provencal cuisine. With all of Amanda’s experience and successes, she keeps her culinary mantra sweet and simple: “I strongly believe that cooking is simplest way of saying ‘I love you’.”


Chef Jeff Dueck


Jeff is a creative professional chef, inspired by the simple pleasures of the table. Good food, family and friends.  Able to meet any professional challenge head on with confidence.  Able to successfully combine creative culinary concepts, with prudent financial management of the kitchen.

Chef Ted Reader


Known as the ‘Godfather of the Grill’, his charm and fearless culinary spirit has led Ted to becoming an award-winning chef, author, food-entertainer and most recently professor of Modern Culinary Applications Innovations at the Canadian Food and Wine Institute at Niagara College.

Ted’s culinary adventure began at George Brown College Chef School in Toronto which to date has paved the way for his dynamic career. He cooks for all walks of life from swanky corporate affairs; to backyard BBQ parties and summer festivals.

Alexandra Feswick


Born and raised in Dundas, Ontario, Alexandra Feswick formed a connection with food and nature from a very young age.  Graduating from the University of Guelph with a BA in Sociology, she eagerly began training at George Brown Chef School in 2005.  Feswick landed an apprenticeship at the Ancaster Mill for five years under Chef Jeff Crump, and was educated with the belief that good food should speak for itself and that it is vital to the integrity of what you’re cooking to do it with your heart. In addition to invaluable cooking skills, she also picked up knowledge about working on a farm and the importance of high quality, fresh, seasonal ingredients – insights that continue to inspire her menus today.

After relocating to Toronto in 2010, Feswick quickly gained ranking as one of Toronto’s top chefs, working behind the line at restaurants like Brockton General and Samuel J. Moore with her loyalty to fresh, local produce served in unique and elegant ways. She remains committed to food service by actively contributing to the network of culinary leaders in Ontario, and regularly donating her time and expertise to cooking for various charitable events.  Career highlights so far include cooking at the venerable James Beard House, participating at Cook It Raw with some of the world’s top chefs, and being invited to compete in the influential Gold Medal Plates competition. In March 2014, Feswick joined forces with Corporate Executive Chef Teddy Corrado as Chef de Cuisine at The Drake Hotel, where she now has a place to call home and an ever-growing, ever-inspiring space to create – which includes an urban garden full of fresh herbs and ingredients, located in a secret alley off of Queen St. W.

Marcus Mariathas


Marcus Mariathas came to Canada in 1993 from Sri Lanka. While studying Business & Finance at the University of Toronto, Marcus took a night job at ACE Bakery®, in the very early days when ACE® had their first bakery and store front on King Street. This serendipitous opportunity would change Marcus’ life forever. It was here that Marcus discovered his natural talent and love for baking authentic, European, artisan breads.

Over the years, Marcus studied and travelled through Europe learning everything there is to know about artisan breads, while rising to the position of Master Baker with ACE®. Today, ACE Bakery® has grown into Canada’s leading artisan bakery; the success in large part due to Marcus’ recipes, crafting exceptionally tasting and artistic breads and baked goods.

This past February, Marcus had the privilege of showcasing his bread skills, representing Team Canada, as he competed in the highly coveted Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie (the equivalent of the Baking Olympics), in Paris.  2016 was the first year in history that Canada has ever qualified for the Coupe du Monde. Marcus along with Team Canada, placed 7th out of 35 competing nations.

Whisk(e)y Chef Matt Jones


Both bartending nerd and whisk(e)y geek, Matt has been working within the beverage alcohol industry for 18 years. He has trained bartenders around the world in product knowledge and bar technique for over a decade. Also known as @Whisky_Chef, Matt continues to share his love of classic cocktails and culinary applications of whisk(e)y.

In 2010 he accepted his favourite role to date: Beam Suntory’s Whisk(e)y Ambassador to Canada and Bourbon Specialist. In this role he travels the country coast to coast preaching the gospel of Whisk(e)y. In 2016 Matt was officially highly commended by Whisky Magazine’s Icons of Whisky as American Whiskey Ambassador of the Year, as well as World Whisky Ambassador of the Year. Matt was most recently featured on the cover of Whisky Magazine issue 138, a global publication

Last but not least… We cannot forget our great hosts of the UCC Battle: Joe Friday and Mike Ward:

Chef Joe Friday


Chef Joe Friday was born in North Carolina, raised in Okinawa, Japan, trained in French Cuisine. His impressive culinary journey began when he enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America to train in pastries and savories. At the age of 20 he was one of 10 pastry students selected globally to work in the international culinary program at Walt Disney World. Six months in, Friday’s superiors recognized great talent, and placed him on the “hot line.” There, is where Friday found his love and passion for savories and has been refining that talent ever since. Within three years time, he had worked his way up to sous-chef and had successfully moved around to various restaurants within the Disney family.

Friday was exposed to different cuisines and cooking techniques while working with influential chefs such as Chef Martin Yan (from “Yan Can Cook”) and Disney’s Executive Chef, John State. After he apprenticed in Norway and England, he returned to Japan to perfect the culinary experience of his childhood; the art of Japanese noodle making. Friday took a position at the world renowned Nobu Wakiki, Honolulu. This was a pivotal moment in Friday’s career were he understood his identity as a chef. With a love for Honolulu, he furthered his career and established himself as the sous-chef at the Hilton Hawaii Village and shortly after became the Executive Chef at Giovani’s.

Seeking tutelage from Canadian renowned Chef Jason Bangerter, Friday assisted as the chef-da-partie in the opening of Toronto’s Luma by O&B at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. In the Fall of 2011, Friday joined the team at Bar Mozza (part of the Alimento Fine Food Emporium) downtown Toronto, as executive Chef.”

Mike Ward


Mike has had a rare and valuable mix of both successful culinary, and media careers. He began cooking at the age of 17 in Sydney, Australia and never believed he would one-day cook for Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. In early 2000 he expanded his creativity to include writing, producing and directing award winning cooking/travel/lifestyle TV series that have been seen in over 120 countries.

Mikes honest and unfiltered perspective on both the food he cooks and the food topics he talks about has seen him rapidly become a respected and influential personality across both mainstream media and social media. He writes for the Globe and Mail, Toronto Sun, 24 Hours (national) and several magazines including content being featured on top online food outlets including the Today Show’s food site, Domino and Food52. Mike has combined monthly social impressions of over 350,000, including nearly 4 million views on his YouTube channel to date.

He is the former Food Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Living (Canada’s #1 food magazine) and cooks on several TV outlets including Cityline (Canada’s #1 morning show). He also regularly hosts and emcee’s leading food and culinary events including the Visa Dining series and Taste of Toronto.

He also serves as a consult to Centennial Colleges’ culinary department to develop curriculum and guest instruct industry relevant culinary courses. Mike is also involved in many charities including Dancing with Parkinsons. His personal passion remains finding solutions and working with organizations that can and are actualizing the concept of fair and accessible good quality food for people of all economic levels. Whether it be a quiet night at home teaching his two daughters how to use the “grown up” knives, in a foreign country directing a cooking series, or flying his beloved 2- seater aerobatic aircraft, Mike’s insatiable appetite for food and adventure continues to drive him to explore and create.

Top 5 Concerts You Probably Shouldn’t Have Missed This Summer


As we wind down to the last days of summer, it’s important that we reflect on the great live music that rolled through Toronto over the past few months. As we all know, “The Six” has become a sort of “Hollywood North” in its own right and each year the line-up of concerts to choose from gets bigger, better and more memorable than the last.

From reunion tours, to surprise appearances, and even gut wrenching goodbyes, the spring and summer of 2016 was filled with performances that took spectators on an unforgettable, emotional journey. Here are the top five concerts you probably shouldn’t have missed in Toronto this summer:

Pearl Jam Tour 2016 – Pearl Jam

Eddy Vedder and the gang swept through Toronto with two kick-ass shows in May, leaving everyone in a state of awe after their performances were finished. The band even brought out famed Canadian guitarist, Donna Grantis for both shows which was very timely considering Prince had been in the news for weeks due to his unfortunate passing.

In the first show, Pearl Jam played their album Binaural in its entirety and finished the show off with two mind-blasting encores that included covers of John Lennon’s Imagine, Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb. The Who’s The Real Me, and Neil Young’s Rockin’ In The Free World.

In their second show, Pearl Jam played everything from Corduroy, Brain of J, Even Flow, and even Daughter for the first half. The second half of the show was a real treat though because the band played two encores that were comprised of songs like Oceans, Breath, Last Kiss, Better Man, Crazy Mary and even…. Yellow Leadbetter. Now any hardcore Pearl Jam fan knows, that it is very rare to see the band play songs like Crazy Mary and Yellow Ledbetter which made this a truly special night.


Queen B stopped in Toronto for her massive Formation World Tour back in May and it was definitely one for the history books. Even if you’re not a huge Beyoncé fan, you can’t deny that the woman has some serious ‘chops’ when it comes to putting on a memorable show. She’s is undeniably one of the best performers of our era.


Beyoncé started off her sold out show with her new single Formation and followed it up with songs like Kitty Kat in acapella and Run The World (Girls). As the night went on, she went in to tracks like Baby BoyMe, Myself and I; and even her classic head banger Diva. To wrap up the night she threw in hits like Crazy In Love, Freedom and the Destiny’s Child classic Survivor which of course made the crowd go absolutely insane.

Summer Sixteen – Drake, Future and Friends

During Toronto’s end of July long weekend, Drake made his infamous return to “The Six” as part of his Summer Sixteen Tour with two sold out shows at the Air Canada Centre for his Annual OVO Fest.

OVO Fest stretched over three venues this year — starting with headliners Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre Friday night, Machel Montano at Echo Beach Saturday night (co-headliner Beenie Man was a no show after contracting the Zika virus and Dengue Fever), and finishing up with Drizzy and Future on Sunday and Monday nights at the Air Canada Centre.

The first night of Drake’s Air Canada Centre Performance started off with guest appearances by local rappers like Dvsn (pronounced Division) and Roy Woods. However, the biggest cameo of the night came from Drake’s rumoured love interest Rihanna. The two heated things up as they were bumping and grinding across the stage while Rihanna sang hits like Needed Me, Bitch Better Have My Money, Work and even Too Good.

On the second show, featured cameos by acts like French Montana, Future, Rihanna, and even Kanye West. In total the show consisted of a 46 song set list that nearly blew the roof off the Air Canada Centre. It was definitely one of the craziest shows of the summer!

Man Machine Poem Tour – The Tragically Hip

It seems as though The Tragically Hip was (and maybe still is) the band everyone was talking about across Canada this summer. Back in May, the band released a statement to their fans letting them know that front man Gord Downie was suffering from terminal brain cancer and that they would be embarking on their best and potentially last tour as a band. As part of this tour, the band played three incredible shows in Toronto and left everything out on the stage, much like they did for all of their shows. However, aside from these three concerts in Toronto, the most important show of the entire tour and possibly the year, was the last one the band played in their home-town of Kingston, Ontario.

Yes we know… This isn’t a show in Toronto, but it’s still very important because it was the second largest moment in television broadcasting history. One quarter of Canada’s population watched The Hip give everything they had and more at this concert and it was a rollercoaster of emotion, right from the get-go.

The part that still stands out is when the image above was taken… for that short moment each and every Canadian felt exactly what Gord Downie was going through and it was a true tear jerker. This concert absolutely solidified The Tragically Hip as Canada’s band and everyone who watched it will never forget where they were that night.

Make America Great Again Tour – Prophets of Rage

Prophets of Rage consists of Chuck D (Public Enemy), B-Real (Cypress Hill), and three quarters of Rage Against The Machine. The band stopped in Toronto for one truly memorable show as part of their Make America Great Again tour.

During this show, fans were lucky enough to hear all the major classics from Rage Against The Machine, including: Guerrilla Radio, Bombtrack, Testify, Bulls on Parade and even Killing in the Name.  Additionally, fans also had the pleasure of hearing their favourite Public Enemy and Cypress Hill songs, courtesy of B-Real and Chuck D.

The most surprising moment of the entire show though, was when the band invited a special guest to the stage who ended up being none other than rock legend Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana). If the crowd wasn’t already head-banging their music loving hearts out, they surely erupted when Grohl joined the band to play MC5’s Kick Out the Jams.  It was one of the most electrifying shows of the summer.

And there you have it… Five of the best live shows Toronto had the pleasure of seeing in the summer of 2016. If you had a chance to see even just one of these shows, be sure to cherish that memory because these experiences don’t come around very often.

Fashion vs. Style: Know the Difference


Most men get confused, intimidated, and overwhelmed when it comes to the subject of dressing (and I don’t mean the kind you put on your salad).

When a man wants to dress better, where does he turn? Unfortunately, most men look to current fashion trends for the answers. The problem with trying to copy what you see in GQ or style blogs is that it sets unrealistic expectations and it leads to men looking and feeling uncomfortable in their clothes. Remember; images in advertisements are highly polished, and the models are pinned and photo shopped. Before you fill your wardrobe with this season’s fleeting fads, let’s consider a more personalized approach…

The Flusserian approach would have you change your question from “what width of lapel are men wearing right now?” to “which width of lapel is right for me?” It really is that simple. Put a portly gentleman in a skinny lapel and the proportions will be off. It’s all about what works for you.

Distortion vs. Proportion

Your individual figure must be taken into consideration. Here are some basic guidelines:

  • Lapels should be half the distance from the base of the neck to the outside shoulder. Anything narrower or wider is considered fashion. Coat length should cover the seat. Wearing trousers as close to one’s natural waist as possible elongates the leg line, which makes a man look taller and slimmer.
  • A man with very short legs in comparison to his torso will benefit from a slightly shorter coat (giving the illusion of a longer leg line). A very tall and thin man will want to use every excuse he can to break up a streamlined look with horizontal lines (balancing the length with some visual width).
  • Someone who still wears a short coat with narrow lapels and low-rise trousers they purchased five years ago, when it was in fashion, will look dated against current fashion.

It’s easy to see how chasing fashion can be a lose/lose game for the consumer; that’s how the industry makes money. The way to break the cycle is by wearing clothes that flatter your individual proportions, whether they’re in fashion or not. If well-made and cared for, these garments will serve you well for decades.

Recast vs. Contrast

You would never put a prized painting in a frame that didn’t complement it. Leveraging the contrast principle is the practice of framing your face with your clothing. Here’s a few tips to consider when it comes to leveraging your contrast:

  • If a medium contrast man has light brown hair, he should wear medium grey suits and a midnight tuxedo. In general; he should wear colors that don’t clash too much.
  • A high contrast man with light skin and dark hair should wear charcoal grey suits and a black tuxedo. He should combine colors on extreme ends of the spectrum (lights with darks).
  • Men with red notes in their hair look best in a fall palette (rusts, olives, reds). That’s not to say he should wear a red suit, but rather something like a navy tie with a little red in it will flatter him.

There’s a lot more to it than that, but the general idea can be summed up by “as above, so below.” If you’ve ever had someone say “that’s a great color on you,” then it was probably flattering for your contrast.

Stale vs. Stealth

There’s a reason why a group of tailors is called a disguisery. A blazer/sport coat/suit coat is the most flattering garment a man can wear. Once you start applying these concepts to your day-to-day routine, people around you will be quick to notice.

The difference between fashion and style boils down to this: Wearing an eggplant designer skinny suit that you saw Joseph Gordon-Levitt sporting in GQ will get you some “nice suit” remarks. Dressing to flatter your contrast/proportion will yield an entirely different type of compliment – it will sound something more like “You look great, but I can’t figure out what’s different.” Which would you rather receive?

Sink vs. Swim

Go into the water slowly before braving the sartorial deep end. You must first learn the rules before you can break them tastefully. Consult with an expert, express your style, let the compliments roll in, and start feeling better with what you wear.
